John Williams (Guitar)
First things first, this is not the guy who wrote music for Star Wars. This John Williams is among the elite classical guitarists alive today, having proved his mastery countless times with many forms, from early classics by Bach and Vivaldi to contemporary works by Takemitsu. But Williams's greatest asset is his subtle interpretation of Spanish masters such as Joaquin Rodrigo and Isaac Albeniz. The Australian born Williams first learned the craft from his father, then went on to master every technical aspect of the guitar under the tutelage of pioneer Andres Segovia. Due to his studies with Segovia, Williams has become a living link to the classical guitar's founding master. Collaborations have furthered his repertoire, whether working with a large symphony orchestra, a fellow guitarist such as Julian Bream or others, including jazz pianist/conductor Andre Previn or violinist Itzak Perlman. Through the years Williams has returned to his roots, performing lush, romantic suites such as Concierto De Aranjuez. - Jessy Terry
Liona Boyd
Liona Boyd's mastery of the guitar has made her one of the few modern classical crossover stars. Her sensitive touch drew praise from Christopher Parkening and, the master himself, Andreas Segovia. During the mid-'70s this lovely British-born blond quickly became a household name in her adopted home of Canada for her Spanish guitar recitals and albums. She then went on to international acclaim with the help of her numerous television appearances and her collaborations with popular guitarists Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins and David Gilmour. Boyd works really well in such company because she remains true to her artistic strengths and never tries to water down or "rock out." Today, both high-minded music critics and the public continue to embrace her work. - Nick Dedina
David Cullen
Philadelphia area guitarist performs in a variety of genres (classical, jazz, new age, world) on nylon-string guitar. Cullen's excellent technique allows for beautiful, Windham Hill-style compositions as well as imaginative interpretations of Bach's cello suites. - Jessy Terry
Manuel Barrueco
A guitarist's guitarist, Manuel Barrueco has for decades been recognized as a consummate musician and passionate ambassador for his instrument. After immigrating to the U.S. from Cuba early in life, he graduated from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, where he now teaches. His extensive discography is mostly classical, with occasional detours into arrangements of songs in other genres such as rock and fusion. - Henry B.
Shinobu Sato
A master guitarist on both steel and nylon-string guitars. Sato, born in Japan, has mastered the art of counterpoint, weaving together melodies in a variety of styles, from strict classical to light instrumental new age. - Jessy Terry
Jason Vieaux
Vieaux's talent as a classical guitarist takes him from the traditional works of Fernando Sor to the more experimental works of modern composer Jorge Morel. His expressive stylings are rarely showy or ostentatious, instead favoring a more mature approach that values dynamics, nuances and subtle "ritardandos" (slowing down) and "accelerandos." - Will Lerner
Ken Bonfield
Acoustic guitarist plays melodic, new-agey songs with limited accompaniment. Mellow and flowing, but jam-packed with harmonic finger-picking melodies.
Badi Assad
An exceptionally talented Brazilian guitarist who is equally talented as an improvising singer. Assad has won numerous awards and accolades for Brazilian jazz and classical music performed with technically flawless technique. Rather than contain her abilities to standard playing, Assad has been known to take chances, drawing unusual tones and rhythms from her guitar and occasionally crossing the line past virtuosity, performing a marimba solo with one hand while simultaneously delivering a syncopated guitar pattern with the other. When she decides to add her vocals, Assad often scats and emulates percussion instruments, evoking the skills of Bobby McFerrin. - Jessy Terry
Fabio Zanon
Impressive technique and rich tone burst from this talented Brazilian guitarist's work. Zanon performs traditional Spanish and classical repertoire, adding his own transcriptions of modern and older keyboard works. - Jessy Terry
Norbert Kraft
As one of Canada's premier classical guitarists, Kraft has won numerous distinctions for his playing. His interpretations of works by the masters, including Hector Villa Lobos and Fernando Sor, showcase his exceptional tone and technique. - Jessy Terry
Jan Davis
Light Flamenco guitar played in a classical style is pleasant but ultimately unoriginal and forgettable. Is that the theme to "Secret Agent Man" or some old Gypsy melody? - Robert Leaver
Zezo Ribeiro
A supremely tasteful classical guitarist, Brazilian Ribeiro's music is a synthesis of jazz, Bossa Nova and Flamenco. Unhurried and subtle, his intuitively melodic play reaches full realization when accompanied by dreamy female vocals. - Robert Leaver
